Our Mission Statement
Serpente Negra Capoeira is an organization founded exclusively for exercise, self-defense, and education.
The objectives of the organization are as follows:
- To promote the betterment of the individual through teaching and studying the Afro-Brazilian art and sport of Capoeira. This will be achieved by instilling self-confidence and a sense of purpose in our students and by fostering a sense of community and camaraderie amongst all members.
- To progress Capoeira as a sport and art form through public demonstrations and workshops, a variety of literature and media, private and public classes, and regional and international collaboration with various Capoeira academies.
Description of Classes
SNC can be described as Contemporanea. We instruct Capoeira Angola & Capoeira Regional/Sao Bento Grande at the beginner level & move into a variety of specific games for the intermediate/advanced levels. All classes consist of music and singing, warm-ups and stretching, drills and techniques, and roda.
Advancement
In order to advance to a higher cordao, students must exhibit a multitude of capabilities. Each cordao has a specific list of attacks/movements/sequences of which they must be proficient. Also, as students grow, they are required to sing the coro; sing lead; learn increasingly difficult toques on the berimbau, atabaque, pandeiro, agogo, and reco-reco. In addition to this "practical" test, students may be required to take a written test over knowledge of our academy and the history of capoeira.
