Capoeira was born out of a fight for freedom. It was developed by Africans who were enslaved in Brazil during the 16th –19th centuries. Being an important part of slave culture, it included many African tribal elements, but also became influenced by the indigenous peoples of Brazil. Playing Capoeira was a way that the oppressed could keep up their morale by practicing their ethnic traditions and resisting white assimilation and minority rule. Owners had forbidden their slaves to train in any type of combat, which has resulted in the dance-like, ostensibly playful martial art. This is why music is so crucial to capoeira. It provides essential energy and pays homage to those who came before us. Students of capoeira are required to not only perform the movements and techniques, but to also learn to play traditional instruments and sing traditional songs.
